Summary

In this candid and riveting memoir, for the first time ever, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company’s early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world’s most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands。

In 1962, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his father and created a company with a simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan。 Selling the shoes from the trunk of his lime green Plymouth Valiant, Knight grossed $8,000 his first year。 Today, Nike’s annual sales top $30 billion。 In an age of startups, Nike is the ne plus ultra of all startups, and the swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe-spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable symbols in the world today。

But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always remained a mystery。 Now, for the first time, in a memoir that is candid, humble, gutsy, and wry, he tells his story, beginning with his crossroads moment。 At 24, after backpacking around the world, he decided to take the unconventional path, to start his own business—a business that would be dynamic, different。

Knight details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream—along with his early triumphs。 Above all, he recalls the formative relationships with his first partners and employees, a ragtag group of misfits and seekers who became a tight-knit band of brothers。 Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything。

Such an awesome book。 Truly。 Very detailed recount of all the events every year of the Nike founder’s life in the years leading up to starting Nike and all the years throughout running it。 Absolutely wild how many times they got so close to failing and how many financial problems they had despite their obvious success。 Phil Knight is a legend。 Long book but highly recommend。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I wasn't really enjoying the first half of the book - again, Phil Knight just seemed so unrelatable (my issue with most biographies of successful people)。 He went to some incredibly prestigious colleges, received capital from his father for his Crazy Idea, collaborated with a legendary coach from the get-go, and was still always trying to paint himself as some sort of underdog or misfit。 It made me roll my eyes (I especially did not like his management style, really felt for Jeff Johnson who was I wasn't really enjoying the first half of the book - again, Phil Knight just seemed so unrelatable (my issue with most biographies of successful people)。 He went to some incredibly prestigious colleges, received capital from his father for his Crazy Idea, collaborated with a legendary coach from the get-go, and was still always trying to paint himself as some sort of underdog or misfit。 It made me roll my eyes (I especially did not like his management style, really felt for Jeff Johnson who was perhaps my favourite in the book)。However, towards the end of the book, I did come to appreciate his tenacity, his ambition, the massive obstacles (loved the American Selling Price situation haha), and the spirit with which they built Nike。 Cool stuff。Anyway, other than the actual story, I loved how it was written。 Very engaging, and very honest。 。。。more

A realistic autobiography about how it really is to do business and create a company。 Throughout the book, we see the onset of the brand, its starting point, its competitors, or the trademarks it undertakes with。 We also learn from the author's motivations and what led him to create a running shoe company (his apprenticeship at Stanford, his gap year travelling around the world, his passion for sports, his competitive personality, and the people who worked with him and covered his scarcities)。 S A realistic autobiography about how it really is to do business and create a company。 Throughout the book, we see the onset of the brand, its starting point, its competitors, or the trademarks it undertakes with。 We also learn from the author's motivations and what led him to create a running shoe company (his apprenticeship at Stanford, his gap year travelling around the world, his passion for sports, his competitive personality, and the people who worked with him and covered his scarcities)。 Similarly, we witness the growth of Nike (named Blue Ribbon before), the importance of having a figurehead who wears the company’s products (either an athlete, an NBA team, or subliminal advertising in a TV show), making the most of events like the Olympic Games to show your brand, as well as the partnership with eastern countries like Japan, South Korea or China。 Phil, besides his ability to promote his products, has an exceptional talent when it comes to telling a story。 。。。more

One of if not my favourite memoirs/ autobiography I have read!Phil alone had such an interesting life experience that would be interesting regardless, but his writing and storytelling makes this a read that was hard to put down。An invaluable lesson on how ones attitude to dealing with struggles and failures in life can change not only your course in life but that of millions。If I could (and I do) recommend one memoir/ autobiography to anyone it is always this one。
